Bali Bird Park (2024) review & expectations

We visited Bali Bird Park as a family outing. We think it’s a great opportunity to have fun and learn at the same time. Bali Bird Park is a vibrant and exciting tropical paradise that’s home to hundreds of different bird species from around the world.

One of the fascinating facts about this park is that it’s divided into seven different regions that replicate the natural habitats of its bird population. This means you’ll get to see the birds in an environment that closely resembles their natural home. It’s like taking a mini tour around the world’s most exotic bird habitats, all within the confines of this beautifully maintained park.

Here’s a little secret: if you’re lucky, you might even get a chance to feed the birds. It’s an experience that’s both thrilling and heartwarming. But remember, always be gentle and respectful towards our feathered friends.

How much does the entrance fee cost for Bali Bird Park

For foreign tourist the price per adult is IDR 385,000 and for children between the age of 2-12 it’s 192,500. For Domestic visitors the normal price is IDR 140,000 and for children IDR 70,000.

Bali Bird Park welcomes visitors every day of the week, ensuring a delightful experience for bird lovers and nature enthusiasts alike. The park opens its doors at 9:00 AM and remains open until 5:30 PM

How to get to Bali Bird Park?

You can reach this place by taxi, scooter or with a private driver. With the scooter you can freely roam after. With a taxi you will need to find another taxi back, it might be harder from here. and with a private driver you have a car waiting for you after you are done with the park.

The History of Bali Bird Park

Bali Bird Park, which began in the early 1990s, officially opened its doors in October 1995. This wonderful bird sanctuary was the idea of Edi Swoboda, a German entrepreneur living in Bali.

Initially, the park was home to about 250 bird species. Now, it boasts more than 1,300 birds from over 250 species, making it a colorful and diverse place for bird enthusiasts and conservationists.

The park has evolved significantly over the years. It started as the only bird park in Indonesia and has become one of Bali’s most popular attractions. The park is specially designed with seven distinct areas that mimic the natural environments of the birds.

Any Special birds you can view

You can see some really special birds in the park. There’s the Lesser Adjutant, Bali Starling, Lesser Bird-of-Paradise, and Salmon-crested Cockatoo. Each one is special in its own way.

The Bali Starling is one bird the park works hard to protect. It used to be common in Bali but almost went extinct because of people taking them, they lost their natural habitat, and other animals that would prey on them. But, thanks to the park and others working hard, there are more Bali Starlings now.

Exhibits and areas of Bali Bird Park

Before I mentioned that there are 7 different parts of the park that imitates the surroundings where the bird is from. My favorite was the bird show and the South America Exhibit! But let’s check out these exhibits.

South America Exhibit

In the South America Exhibit, you can marvel at the Hyacinth Macaw, known as the world’s largest parrot, measuring around 3.5 ft long with a striking regal blue color. The Blue & Gold Macaw, with its vibrant blue and orange hues, is a highlight, living up to 50 years in controlled environments and enjoying human company. This exhibit also features a variety of other fascinating birds like the Scarlet Ibis, Swainson’s Toucan, and the Glossy Ibis.

South Africa Exhibit

The South Africa Exhibit is home to the African Gray Parrot, famous for its ability to mimic human speech and showcasing a bright personality. Here, you can also see the elegant Pink Flamingos, known for their bug and fish hunting near pools, and the African Crowned Crane, astonishing with its dance moves and spiky mohawk.

Sumatra Exhibit

In the Sumatra Exhibit, the Eagle Owl stands out with its unique sideways ears, adapting to various forest regions. The White Crested Hornbill, with its fluffy white head, prefers the high trees. This exhibit also includes the Crimson Wing Parakeet, Lesser Coucal, and the Black Indian Hawk Eagle.

Borneo Exhibit

The Borneo Exhibit features the Bulwer’s Wattled Pheasant, unique with its long blue face and beak, and the males flaunt a white tail during mating rituals. This area also hosts the Nicobar Pigeon, Great Argus Pheasant, and the Javan great Rhinoceros Hornbill.

Papua Exhibit

In the Papua Exhibit, the Golden-necked Cassowary, the largest bird on the planet, spends its life on the ground, offering a majestic sight. This section also includes the Golden Pheasant, Rainbow Lorikeet, and the Red bird of Paradise.

Java Exhibit

The Java Exhibit showcases the Magpie Robin, an adorable singing bird with black and white feathers that shimmer in sunlight. The Java Sparrow, with its attractive gray and white feather pattern, is also a highlight, along with the Purple-backed Starling and the Asian Fairy-Bluebird.

Bali Exhibit

The Bali Exhibit focuses on the native Bali Starling, an endangered species, with ongoing regeneration efforts at the park. The Peaceful/Zebra Dove, with its striped patterns and colorful appearance, is another attraction, along with a variety of other species like the Australian Pelican and the Black-naped Oriole.

Additionally, the park features various shows like the Bali Rainforest and Basic Instinct, showcasing local birds and birds of prey in free flight. Interactive experiences like Pelican Feeding and Lory Feeding allow close encounters with these birds. The Guyu Guyu Corner is perfect for photographers and vloggers, offering up-close encounters with parrots and cockatoos. The 4D Theater provides educational movies about birds and forest culture, and the Komodo Experience showcases the fascinating Komodo Dragons.

Fighting Extinction Club

I want to emphasize about the Fighting Extinction Club and bring the following message: practice less plastic!

The Fighting Extinction Club at Bali Bird Park is deeply committed to the recovery and conservation of over 15 bird species and the Komodo Dragon. The program focuses on delivering tangible conservation outcomes through local efforts. As a facilitator of wildlife knowledge, the club aims to drive conservation action and educate its members and the public. I strongly encourage the same information they are conveying: Stop the use of single use plastics. We and a lot of animals will benefit a lot from this.

I want to advocate strongly on Eco tourism in Bali because of the ever-growing popularity of Bali.

Bird Feeding & other activities

One of the best things to do is the feeding sessions. You can feed birds right from your hand, which is a really special experience.

The bird shows are amazing and full of information. They’re not just for show; they really teach you about the birds.

Painting eggs

For about 2 euro’s you can do some egg painting.

Conservation Efforts and Environmental Impact

The park is also set up to be good for the environment. It has natural areas for the birds, lots of different plants, 52 types of palms, rare fruit trees, and even cactus. There are three lakes where water birds live. The park has 60 places where birds can live that are just like their natural homes.

Bali Bird Park also works with other groups to protect birds. It teams up with the Friends of the National Parks Foundation to help the Bali Starling. The park is part of the Besikalung Wildlife Sanctuary too. This place is a safe spot for birds and animals in the forest near Mt. Batukaru in central Bali. Souvenirs and eating

We didn’t stay very long around 2 hours is enough. There is option to eat there. The souvenir shop is something you won’t miss! great oppurtunity to buy a souvenir. You can also get a printed photo which isn’t very expensive.

Is it worth visiting Bali Bird Park?

Definately worth it. It’s great to visit as families. We enjoyed especially bird feeding part as this was exciting for my child. The 4d cinema was a month to rest sit and relax and watch the show! so don’t forget to visit that one.
